Auto Gearbox Wont Change Up

anyone got any pointers

 

the engine will rev through the roof but the gears wont change

 

its totally erractic, i cant find any pattern to when or why, ie. cold, hot, hills towns its good for while and then bad for while and so on

 

would realy like some ideas

Auto's dont you just love em! will it select reverse or change up the box manually?

its been mentioned before about the auto box's ECU loom breaking down and causeing a few problems or the gearbox's ECU going U/S best bets sticking into the dealers and getting the fault codes read

Have you had any work done where the loom may have supported the weight of the box, this is known to break some of the conductors and cause problems if the box is not properly supported!!!

i forgot to mention the problem has got worse, it used to happen on the occasional journey but now its every journey and getting much harder to force a gearchange. i can only make it change by revving it high and releasing throttle sharply to nothing, then it thuds in. it wont manually shift, that makes no difference.

its had no work done so i think the loom idea is doubtful.

one of the threads on here, said that if the maf is not functioning that can cause strange gear problems, with that in mind i have tried disconnecting the maf for a few days and reconnecting for a few. this seem to make no difference either. in fact the running of the engine seemed exactly the same too, which makes me wonder if the maf is faulty

 

i'd appreciate any further thoughts

Best bets a trip to the dealers and get the codes read before anymore damage is possibly done to the gearbox!

Is the ATF leaking away? Blocked valve in the 'box? Looks as if specialist advice will be required, in conjunction with an investigation.

Hi Vinny,

 

When it "wont change up", is it stuck in 3rd, or in some other gear? You can tell by the rpm/spped ratio what gear you're in.

 

If it's stuck in 3rd, then thats probably the powertrain ECU going into "get you home" mode, because it has detected a fault with the autobox; in this mode, you only get reverse and 3rd. If you turn off the engine and then restart, the ECU will be in normal mode,unless it detects a fault again.

 

I had this problem, which ended up being due to some wires in the harness to the autobox breaking. As a result, the ECU was intermittently receiving dodgy signals from the autobox and going into the "get you home mode".

the problem happens in all gears when its playing up

 

i'm getting in to a gearbox specialist as listed on another post, i'll see what they say,but i have a suspicion its gonna be expensive

I had exactly the same problem on my 115bhp tdi Alhambra(Galaxy) last year (Auto Tiptronic box). Dealer said it was caused by the Mass Air Flow meter, a local auto specialist confirmed to me this can cause violent gear changes.

 

The bad news is it went again two days ago, only this time instead of losing upper gears we lost all drive, dealer now says I need a new gearbox at cost of

Worth complaining to Virgin too as they have sold you a car not really suited for purpose - a family vehicle should be fitted with a gearbox that lasts for more than 2 years and 16,000 miles.

3 months ago I had the same problem. I had to take it to VW and they changed the ECU for the gearbox. Problem solved however cost four hundred pounds to replace!!
